Introduced in 1958, Dianabol, or D-bol, is one of the most important and highly revered steroids in bodybuilding. Its chemical name is methandrostenolone, and it is a derivative of testosterone with moderate androgenic and strong anabolic properties. It was the most popular steroid of its time because of its effectiveness, affordability, and availability. Shortly after its release to the public around 1960, Dr. John Bosley Ziegler became the first person to distribute Dianabol to Olympic athletes.
He quickly realized that the drug enhanced performance phenomenally, and until scientists developed proper testing for steroids, it was the most popular steroid among all kinds of professional athletes. Even celebrities and actors used Dianabol, including the famed Arnold Schwarzenegger who won the coveted Mr. Olympia title seven times. In the 1980s, the US Congress placed anabolic steroids under the Controlled Substances Act, making them illegal to possess or use without a prescription and medical need.
